Excavator Operation Tips
Excavators are almost ubiquitous among construction companies due to their power and versatility. That makes it all the more important that excavator owners understand how to best utilize an excavator in order to maximize safety and efficiency. That’s why the experts at Flint Equipment Co. have created this guide to excavator operation.
Before Using the Excavator
Get Trained
Only fully certified operators should be allowed to use an excavator. It’s also important that the operator has a functioning knowledge of their particular model and its quirks. Even two models that appear to be extremely similar can differ in important ways. Fully reading the manual is usually a good place to start.
Inspect and Maintain the Excavator
Routine inspections help ensure safety and catch potential issues before they have a chance to get worse. Regular excavator maintenance can also help your excavator perform better and reduce your overall risk of experiencing an accident caused by a mechanical failure.
When Using the Excavator
Pick the Best Route
When moving the excavator, the operator should take pains to use only the safest route possible. Stick to flat terrain wherever possible. Driving over bumps and slopes can lead to the equipment tipping over.
Keep the Bucket Down While Moving
A raised bucket reduces an excavator’s stability and makes it more difficult for the operator to see. That’s why the operator should always lower the bucket before attempting to move the excavator.
Take Turns Slowly
Excavators are not designed to take quick, sharp turns. Gradually turns help keep the excavator stable, something that’s especially important if the ground is unstable or otherwise uncertain.
Be Alert and Ready to Adapt
One of the most important things that the excavator operator can do to help keep themselves and others safe is to maintain situational awareness. If the excavator encounters rough terrain or a crowded area, then it’s time to slow down until the hazard has been overcome.
After Using the Excavator
Park the Excavator
Excavators should be parked on the flattest, sturdiest surface available, with the bucket lowered.
Turn Off the Excavator
Once the operator has found an appropriate place to park, they should turn off the auto-idle switch and let the engine run unloaded at half throttle for a few minutes. This will allow the turbocharger to cool down. The operator should then set the RPM to lower idle, shut the engine off, exit the cab, and lock up.
